Spotlight: Boot Camp: Sports Journalism & Communications

You’ve played the game for years, and now you have the opportunity to tell your story. Player Engagement is hosting Boot Camp: Sports Journalism & Communications for the second year at Bowling Green State University. Taught by BGSU’s esteemed sports journalism faculty and industry experts, this intensive journalism program prepares current and former players for careers covering the game they know so well.

Participants in Boot Camp: Sports Journalism & Communications will receive hands-on training and mentoring from some of the top journalists in the business and leave with their very own portfolio of stories written at the Boot Camp. Not only will participants have the opportunity to give their perspective on hot topics in sports, but they will also cover a live Triple A baseball game. A visit to the Toledo Mud Hens will give participants experience in covering a live press conference with GM and President Joe Napoli and place them right in the action as they cover the game live and write-post-game commentary.

Not only does Boot Camp: Sports Journalism & Communication prepare players for careers covering the game as writers, it is great preparation for a career in broadcasting as well. Participants will learn how to write commentary for radio and TV and then record their own original radio pieces. Additional focus is also placed on the importance of social media in today’s journalism and broadcasting world, as participants learn how to maximize the power of online tools to tell their story. As local and national TV and radio networks require more of their broadcasters to write their own stories and maintain network-specific blogs, these journalism skills will prove invaluable if you are considering pursuing a career in broadcasting.

Last year’s participants in Boot Camp: Sports Journalism & Communications went on to have their stories published in the Toldeo Blade and MMQB.com, and to do guest-radio spots on NBC Sports Radio. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to get your voice heard. Apply to Boot Camp: Sports Journalism & Communications today!

Boot Camp: Sports Journalism & Communications will take place on May 12th – 15th, 2014 at Bowling Green State University. The cost to attend is $1,000 plus travel. Applications are available now and must be submitted by February 28th, 2014. Visit the NFL Engagement Zone for additional information and to apply.
