Super Bowl week found select players engaging with kids in the world of stripes at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. You Make the Call: Learn to Be an NFL Official, opened January 8th and is designed to engage youth ages 0 – 8 on the positive skills and characteristics it takes to become an official and a professional at the highest level.
Youth Fans were fascinated with some of their favorite football heroes Andre Brown (NYG), Prince Amukamara (NYG), Terell Thomas (NYG), Brandon Meyers (NYG), Darly Richardson (STL) and Markus Kuhn (NYG) as they Made Flag, Made the Stripes and danced the “Zebra Dance”. And even if our pee wee fan population weren’t sure who some of these players were, they will have fond memories of larger than life figures teaching them about sportsmanship, health and fitness and what it takes to be successful in the pros.
Bears RB Martellus Bennett, CEO of The Orange Dino, engaged with children and parents alike in story time which included interactions with NFL Official Wayne Mackie. He mentions that connecting with the officials prior to a game assists him with what he can and can’t do to help him have a penalty free game. Wayne Mackie agreed that “dead ball officiating” can help ensure all THREE teams on the playing field are on the same page.
