The NFL, says spokesman Dan Masonson, will Monday formally announce a new program for players that might sound suspiciously like they are still in college and looking for classes that are, uh, compatible with playing football.
The NFL, on May 13-16, will offer a seminar where the final exam will be based on the Toledo Mud Hens.
Don't laugh. The NFL's latest so-called Boot Camp, which are multi-day seminars for current and former players meant to teach marketable skills, will have a May 13-16 "Sports Journalism and Communication" class at Bowling Green State University. So far, 23 current and former players – included retired 12-year NFL vet Charlie Batch, 2012 New England Patriots Hall of Fame inductee Troy Brown and 2001 Heisman winner Eric Crouch – have signed up. The idea: To improve writing and reporting skills.
Faculty will include various journalists such as Sports Illustrated's Peter King and the Associated Press' Barry Wilner overseeing a curriculum that includes a final on Toledo's minor-league baseball team. And faculty can be tough graders: Nobody's playing eligibility is at stake.
