WRI Spotlight: Kim McFadden

Vice President of NFL Human Resources

Maybe it was just meant to be that Kim McFadden would eventually work for the National Football League.

During her freshman year of college at Elizabethtown, Kim met her best friend, whose uncle just happened to be Leonard Tose, the then flamboyant owner of the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I’ve always liked football,’’ McFadden, who is the NFL’s Vice President of Human Resources, said. “I was always a Giants fan, then in college and after I met my husband I became an Eagles fan.’’

After college, McFadden worked in human resources for Lockheed-Martin, Motorola and Johnson and Johnson before landing with NFL Films in 2008 as their Director of HR. In 2011 she was promoted to her current role as Vice President.

In her position she handles human resources for everyone in the NFL’s New York office and the employees at NFL Films in Mount Laurel, N.J.  She splits her time driving from her home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania over the river to New Jersey a few days a week, and taking the train into the city the rest of the week.

“I am the HR business partner for all employees at the NFL, except the (NFL) Network employees,’’ she said. “They’re based in Los Angeles.’’

And after going from a major electronics company to a major drug company she is now with the nation’s No. 1 sports organization.

“When people ask me where I work and I tell them the NFL they think that’s the coolest job in the world.’’

McFadden said, “It is a great job and I love it here and the people I work for are great as well. But HR is HR, whether it’s at J and J or for the NFL. Your skills in HR are transferable."

“I was fortunate that J and J was very forward thinking when it came to HR. The NFL is still continuing to make strides in the world of HR, but that’s the challenge and I am always up for a challenge."

McFadden does not work directly with the players or the coaches, since most teams have their own human resource person. She does work closely with that person on different ideas and topics that come up over the course of the year.

“We do a lot of work with the teams,’’ she said. “I know most clubs’ human resource personnel. We work together on things like development ideas and employee engagement.’’

Her latest endeavor was working with the NFL officials, after Carl Johnson decided last December to leave his role in the league office as Vice President of Officiating to become the league’s first full-time official beginning March 1.

“I worked closely with Jeff Pash (the NFL’s executive vice president of labor and general counsel),’’ McFadden said. “We wanted to make sure we closed all the gaps. The referees are in the spotlight, so we wanted to make sure we got it right.’’

She didn’t know it at the time, but McFadden had it right from when she met her best friend in college.
