“The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses – no one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours. It is an amazing journey and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day that your life really begins.” ~ Bob Moawad
As we close in on the year end, it is an ideal time for each of us to engage in some reflective soul-searching. To be truly successful in life, regardless of what you do or where you are, I think it is essential to periodically “self check” and think honestly about where you have been and where you are going.
It is good to take time out to examine who you are, whether you are taking the proper steps to achieve your short or long-term aspirations, and most importantly, whether you are fulfilling your purpose in life.
In order to be extraordinary in all that you do, you must first be crystal clear – right down to the bottom of your soul – as to who you are on the inside. I also believe that you must own your life and get up every single day realizing that you alone are responsible for the quality of your own special journey. This life is about the journey (mine and yours) and the lives we can touch, the legacy we can leave, and the world we can change for the better.
Throughout the past year, we’ve talked a great deal about the importance of being a good teammate as well as how to form and build solid relationships with your mentors and teachers. We’ve also discussed how your role models can significantly impact what you do both on and off the field.
Before you can engage in a positive and meaningful relationship with anyone else, having a great relationship with yourself is essential. It is your own special combination of values, character, and beliefs that sets your course and helps determine how successful your life’s journey will be.
As we close out the year, I challenge all — whether you are an athlete, a coach, a parent, or someone who influences someone else’s life: Stand by your convictions. Summon the courage to be UN-common.
From my family to yours, have a blessed holiday season.
