NFL Player Engagement
Spring is a time of transition for all football players.
For many of you, that means transitioning out of last year and now preparing for next year by participating in OTAs and minicamps.
But for some of you who are transitioning out of the game or simply thinking ahead to that inevitable day, now is the time to prepare for your career after football.
Former NFL tight end Tony Stewart did just that during his playing days so that when his playing experience ended a few years ago, he was ready.
He is now President of Beyond the Locker, which works with young athletes, is a veteran NFL Ambassador, and recently became an NFLPE Transition Assistance Coach.
He says his Ambassador role helps him keep his edge, and considers it an opportunity to stay connected to the NFL while having the privilege to travel around the country representing the League.
With this fast start out of the gate following his playing days, Stewart’s first piece of advice to those in transition is to put your pride on the backburner, and remain visible by reaching out to the NFLPE for advice and ideas.
He understands how things change in a hurry as an NFL career concludes, noting that it is night and day between playing or not playing. Life goes on with your former team, which can create a feeling of isolation for you, so staying in touch with those who have been in the same situation is of the utmost importance.
Stewart did just that during and after his career, as he seized the opportunity to participate in NFLPE programs, including the Stanford and Wharton Business Management & Entrepreneurial Programs, Broadcast Boot Camp, and also internships that we offer this time of year.
He had recognized the learning curve he faced, even with his college degree, and found our NFLPE courses to be the perfect adjunct education to put him over the top and prepare him to run his own company.
The result? He is living the dream by following his passion of working with youth on their athletic development through his company’s hosting of minicamps, self-discovery and awareness workshops, and social/motivational courses teaching life skills.
