The Payback on Giving Back

By Angela Charlton, PhD

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity. “ - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Indeed, one of the most rewarding feelings is giving to others. Giving to others doesn’t necessarily need to be a financial contribution. One of the most precious gifts is giving your time. Kolby Smith, four-year NFL veteran says, "As a society, we are responsible for what takes place in our neighborhoods. By investing in the people of the community we create a bright and prosperous future for the next generation."

There are numerous organizations that would welcome volunteers to work with their youth on educational, career, or sports related initiatives. When considering volunteering your time or making a monetary contribution there are several steps you should take. The first step should be clarifying your own values and identifying what is important to you. Next, search for charities that represent those values. Once an organization has been identified there are several important factors to consider. According to MSNBC, it is important to make sure the organization is legitimate and you understand their mission and values and that they carry out that mission. Additionally, spend some time at the organization to check out how things are being run before you attach your time, name, or money. Also, there are organizations such as the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, CharityWatch.org, and the National Association of State Charity Officials (www.nasconet.org) that provide extensive information about charities.
