Derek Hagan returns to school with internship at UCF

Students at the University of Central Florida welcomed a new Knight to the campus. The Oakland Raiders’ wide receiver Derek Hagan joined students of the DeVos Sport Business Management program throughout the week in their classes.

Hagan attended Arizona State University from 2002-2005. He did not complete his Bachelor’s degree after signing with the Miami Dolphins in the 2006 NFL draft.

The ASU super star, remembered for his performance on the field, will now be remembered for his perseverance in the classroom. “I decided to go back just because I knew it was something that I promised to my parents a long time ago, that I would be in school to get an education and also play football. The main thing was to get a degree and it’s been a long, but just knowing that I’m finally finished, it’s excitement and relief at the same time.”

Hagan decided to go back to school during this off-season to finish his degree. One of the requirements left in order to officially call himself an alumnus includes an internship. Hagan decided to pursue his internship credit at UCF with Dr. C. Keith Harrison of the DeVos Sport Business Management program. He said he ran into Harrison three years ago and told him he wanted to finish school. “It’s right in the areas that I’m interested in. It deals with sport and sports in entertainment and there’s nothing better than that,” said Hagan.
